Piped Water for Filipino Urban Poor 14 July 2006, Manila – The Asian Development Bank (ADB) initiated its pilot project for small-piped water networks (SPWN) in the Philippines. The project aims to deliver more efficiently and affordable potable water to urban areas that are not connected to water piped in by utilities. The project is under the regional technical assistance grant, entitled "Implementing Pilot Projects for Small-Piped Water Networks," which will be implemented in urban areas in India, Vietnam and the Philippines. The TA aims to connect 18,000 to 20,000 urban residents in Ahmedabad, Ho Chi Min and Metro Manila to piped water supply. According to Bidu Lohani, director general for the Regional and Sustainable Development Department of the ADB, SPWN will help achieve Millenium Development Goal Target 10, which is "Halve, by 2015, the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation." The total project cost is estimated at US$800,000. It will be financed by ADB's TA funding program in the amount of US$200,000, and the government of France in the amount of US$200,000. The remaining US$400,000 will be shouldered by ADB's Cooperation Fund for the Water Sector. Read more |
