For the past four decades, the ADB's development intervention in Asia and the Pacific region has contributed to environmental damage and the displacement of millions of people. According to the Operations Evalauation Department, the Bank's operations have led to the displacement of 1.77 million since 1994. Moreover, projects approved in the last five years are expected to affect 100,000 to 150,000 people every year. The ADB has also continued to fund fossil fuel-dependent projects, such as coal power plants, large dam projects and road corridors traversing environmentally-sensitive areas.
From 3-6 May 2008, the ADB will be holding its 41st Annual Governors' Meeting (AGM) in Madrid, Spain. The AGM is an important event where the Bank's Board of Governors makes important decisions setting its direction. The AGM is also an opportunity for civil society organizations to interact with the Bank's senior officials and staff about contentious issues related to its policies and projects.
